What is compounding?

Pharmacy compounding is the art of customizing medications for the exact needs of a patient. The practice of compounding dates back to the origins of pharmacy practice. At Bloomington Drug, we have the ability to prepare medications when a product does not exist or is not available on the market. New research, modern technology, and innovative techniques developed over the last few decades have allowed more pharmacists to customize medications to meet every unique need.

Why do we compound?

We have the ability to:
  • Leave out fillers, preservatives, and dyes
  • Add flavor to make the medication more palatable
  • Customize the strength or dose of the medication
  • Combine two or more medications into one for ease of use
  • Formulate medications that are not commercially available
  • Formulate medications for patients with specific allergies or sensitivities
  • Work with veterinarians to provide medication tailored for pets
  • Prepare custom hormone replacement therapy that can benefit both men and women in hormonal imbalances

What can we compound at Bloomington Drug?

We have extensive experience compounding bioidentical hormones, as well as pain management, dermatology, and veterinary products. Commonly requested dosage forms include creams, lozenges, capsules, triturates, suppositories, tablets, troches, gels, suspensions, and chew treats.

Is compounding expensive? Will insurance cover my compounded medication?

Cost depends on the ingredients, equipment used, and the time needed to prepare the medication. Because every insurance plan is unique, some insurance plans cover the compounded medications directly upon billing from the pharmacy counter while others may require the patient to submit a claim form. Contact your pharmacy benefit plan to learn about your coverage for compounded medications.

I alone cannot change the world, but I can cast a stone across the waters to create many ripples.
